Pharmapack 2024 – where innovation meets sustainability

Pharmapack 2024 – where innovation meets sustainability

For over a decade, Avery Dennison has attended Pharmapack in Paris at the end of January. It is a unique show of global importance that is dedicated specifically to pharmaceutical packaging. Innovative packaging is essential to ensuring the safety and efficacy of life-saving pharmaceutical products and is a key priority for Avery Dennison as a company. It was a pleasure to meet with some of our pharma specialized customers and partners that are helping us deliver innovation to the sector which includes our new solutions such as Tamper evident Semi Clear paper and our AD Procerta label testing service specifically for the pharmaceutical sector.

Innovation in Injectable Devices

One of the event's highlights was a joint presentation we conducted with Becton Dickinson, a world-leading medical device manufacturer on "transforming Pharma fill/finish process with RFID-enabled prefillable syringes". In this session, we explored how RFID can provide end-to-end traceability and authentication from the manufacturer to the patient. RFID tags are ideal for the pharmaceutical industry because they can be read remotely, withstand very cold temperatures, and are small enough to be used in applications like syringes, where space is limited.

Injection devices are another major trend shaping the pharmaceutical packaging sector for several reasons. While oral drug administration is a simple and convenient method of medication delivery, injections are more efficient and effective.

This trend has led to a new generation of medicines delivered via innovative injectable devices. These include lifestyle disease drugs for diabetes or obesity, where injection pens are commonly used for easy at-home administration by patients. For healthcare professionals, prefilled syringes are rapidly becoming the preferred choice for patients.

We're witnessing significant innovation in this area, including RFID/NFC-connected pens that enhance patient safety and therapy adherence, and wearable devices that monitor glucose levels and automatically inject patients when needed.

Sustainability concerns are driving innovation

Sustainability is a key consideration and is also driving innovation. Previously the industry has mostly been focused on the reduction of packaging including reducing overall size and optimizing the design. This remains important, but at Pharmapack we saw more discussions on the potential recycling of pharmaceutical packaging and even re-using existing items.

With patient safety, quite rightly the leading concern of the pharma industry there has often been reluctance to re-use equipment but it was interesting to attend a ‘Lightening Talk’ presented by Frode Nygård from Novo Nordisk AG who discussed the possibility and feasibility of reusing parts of used injection pens. This will be a highly complex process with multiple logistical and compliance roadblocks to solve but it is taken seriously and we can expect to see further innovation in the near future.

Decarbonization goes hand in hand with sustainability and it was interesting to see a demonstration from Schott in association with packaging supplier Korber where the electrification of glass melting furnaces and the introduction of a mono packaging solution for prefilled syringes using secondary packaging is really making a difference. The numbers and savings presented during this session showed that when innovation is applied at such a scale, it can really make a big difference.

Legislation is also driving innovation

Looking ahead we can expect to see legislation such as the EU Proposal for a revision of the  Packaging and Packaging Waste regulation (PPWR) to drive further innovation. The proposed PPWR will overhaul everything about the way packaging is designed and used in the EU and is likely to influence global policy for many years. This is why the industry needs to start acting now to ensure a smooth and timely transition to the circular economy which will be its ultimate intention. Avery Dennison is ensuring that from a labeling perspective, all our solutions are compatible with recycling streams such as LDPE and HDPE are compatible as more and more pharmaceutical packaging will be recycled and reused. With the pace of innovation picking up fast it will be interesting to attend Pharmapack 2025 and see how some of this promise has moved forward.
