Let’s connect to electrify the future: A recap of The Battery Show Europe 2024

This year, The Battery Show Europe 2024, held in Stuttgart, Germany, marked another big milestone for the advanced battery manufacturing industry. As Europe's largest and leading trade show dedicated to the sector, the event attracted over 19,000 professionals eager to explore the latest innovations and solutions for advanced battery and electric & hybrid vehicles. And with more than 800 exhibitors, the show truly reflected the growing size and influence of the industry, being almost five times bigger than the 2019 show!

At Avery Dennison, we were excited to present our range of solutions in Performance Tapes, Label and Packaging Materials, and Intelligent Labels. Attendees were particularly interested in our solutions around electrification and connecting the physical and digital worlds, so below is an overview of these two key topics.

The power of electrification

The shift towards electrification continues to shake up the automotive industry, with the demand for EVs increasing at an extraordinary pace. In fact, it's forecasted that over 17 million electric vehicles will be sold globally by the end of 2024, representing 25% of all new passenger car registrations. This trend brings new opportunities, particularly in the need for innovative labeling solutions that can withstand EVs' unique environments and safety standards.

However, this shift also presents a challenge: the urgent need for universal testing standards. Ulrike Steinfort, the technical marketing manager for Durable Goods at Avery Dennison, highlighted this point recently: "The absence of universal testing standards means the EVB labeling process remains fragmented and somewhat inefficient. Implementing universal tests could streamline development processes, cut costs, and ensure consistent quality. The automotive industry has successfully implemented standardized systems like the IMDS, demonstrating the feasibility of this approach."

Connecting the physical and digital worlds

In addition to electrification, integrating digital solutions, particularly RFID and cloud-tracking assets, also caught visitors' attention at our booth this year. These technologies are key to improving the traceability, efficiency, and security of battery systems, and this year, we were proud to showcase our sophisticated RFID solutions and laser etchable labels, which provide identification and tracking capabilities necessary for modern battery management.

The increased interest in digital solutions reflects the industry's move towards smarter, more connected battery systems. Our innovations anticipate these demands, ensuring product longevity, high performance, and compliance with industry safety standards. By connecting the physical and digital worlds, we are helping to drive the EV industry forward, offering an all-in-one source for every bonding, connecting, protecting, and labeling requirement. More about these solutions is below.

Avery Dennison's advanced solutions for the battery industry

Whether embracing electrification or integrating digital solutions in the world of batteries, we are always trying to lead the way when it comes to pressure-sensitive adhesive solutions. We offer a variety of specially designed products to meet the individual needs of the industry, including the following:

Bonding: Our PP (and PET) self-wound electrolyte-resistant tapes provide secure and reliable bonding for jelly roll fixing and insulation in lithium-ion cells, ensuring long-term stability and performance. We also offer bonding solutions for mica thermal barriers based on our flame retardant adhesive (FT 21120FR), which enhances thermal management and safety. Additionally, our Fire Retardant Transfer Tape FT 21120FR, along with our PSA flame retardant film portfolio, meets UL94 standards, providing critical flame retardant and electrical insulation properties necessary for battery safety. Thermal runaway barriers, made from flame and temperature-resistant paper with FR adhesive (FT 21120FR), also offer essential protection against thermal runaway events, ensuring battery integrity and safety.

Electrical insulation: Our two-layer PET blue cell wrap insulating film provides robust electrical insulation and mechanical protection for battery cells, essential for the demanding environments within EVs. In addition, our self-adhesive films offer reliable electrical insulation for heat exchangers and cell connection systems, ensuring optimal performance and safety. Flame-retardant dielectric solutions meeting UL94 test standards were also featured

Identification and tracking: As mentioned before, we provide laser etchable labels that offer precise and durable identification solutions essential for traceability and compliance in battery systems. Our wrap-around PET-based label material for track and trace of cable harnesses ensures accurate identification and maintenance. Demanding environments where materials that comply with UL94 flammability standards to the level of VTM-0 are a matter of course.  And not to forget, our RFID technology enables advanced tracking and data management, enhancing the efficiency and security of battery systems. There is a growing trend towards digital identity as simulations in a digital environment improve productivity and minimize errors.

It is clear that the rapid pace of electrification and the integration of digital solutions are among the key driving forces shaping the industry's future. As we venture further into this fast-changing landscape, our focus remains on staying on the pulse of industry trends and continuously refining our offerings. Whatever your challenge, at Avery Dennison, we're helping you power the future of e-mobility.
