Sustainability Durables - Pioneering sustainable labeling solutions for durable applications

Pioneering sustainable labeling solutions for durable applications

The electronics, appliances, automotive (including tires), and petrochemical industries are at a crossroads, encountering several challenges that require innovative labeling solutions.  Regulatory requirements and consumer expectations are driving the need for solutions that enable packaging circularity, but finding sustainable materials that meet stringent industry benchmarks (e.g., UL, BS5609) has been a challenge.

At Avery Dennison, we recognize the role sustainability plays in these industries, and are committed to pioneering labeling solutions without compromising performance. Our dedication to this is embedded in our operations, driving us to develop industry-leading solutions that meet the dual demands of high performance and environmental responsibility. For years, we have been at the forefront of innovation in this field, leveraging our long history of expertise in materials science to pioneer products that set new standards for sustainability.

Our journey towards a more sustainable future is guided by our ambitious 2030 goals, which are built on three key pillars and reflect our dedication to not only advancing our sustainability agenda but also supporting our customers and the broader industry in achieving their own objectives.

Sustainability Durables - Pioneering sustainable labeling solutions for durable applications

Recognizing the urgent need for more circular solutions in the industry, we’re proud to introduce a new range of solutions designed to replace existing products with more sustainable alternatives that are just as robust.

How the electronics, appliances, automotive (including tires), and petrochemical industries are adopting sustainable practices

But why is this shift so important? Because the industry is in dire need of it. The transition to sustainable materials is not just a response to regulatory pressures but a strategic move that aligns with the broader industry trends. Let's look at some specific areas within the market that are being affected by this shift and their progress to date:

Sustainability Durables - Pioneering sustainable labeling solutions for durable applications
  • The automotive sector has made notable progress in reducing its environmental footprint. Between 2006 and 2021, emissions from car manufacturing in the EU decreased by over 45%. Additionally, the CO2 emissions of new cars dropped by around 22% in the nine years leading up to 2021. Despite these achievements, the industry continues to account for approximately 15% of total CO2 emissions in the EU, meaning that a significant challenge remains in controlling these emissions from upstream supply chains.

  • In the tire market, sustainable materials such as recycled and natural rubber, and innovative substances play a major role in maintaining environmental responsibility. Additionally, re-treading, which restores worn-out tires, is becoming increasingly popular as a way to extend tire life. In fact, the sustainable tire market in Europe (excluding the UK) is projected to grow from $24 million in 2023 to $358.5 million by 2032. This growth is fueled by the growing demand for circular tires and the incorporation of sustainable materials into passenger and commercial vehicle tires.

  • And finally, in the petrochemicals sector, Europe's emphasis on sustainable packaging solutions and compliance with environmental standards is driving significant market growth. The region, which accounts for around 20% of the global chemical drums market share, is seeing an increased demand for sustainable packaging solutions.

Introducing our new and improved sustainable labeling materials for durable applications

For Automotive, appliances, and electronics: Our new solutions, containing up to 70% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, match the quality of their virgin PET counterparts and are UL-recognized. They are ideal for labels and overlays where durability and clarity are essential, and their resilience against environmental factors makes them suitable for both interior, exterior and under the hood applications. These solutions include Transfer rPET White TOP, Transfer rPET Matt White, Transfer rPET50 Trans Top, and Overlam rPET.

For the tire market: Our white polypropylene film materials incorporate 30% recycled content from mechanically recycled post-consumer waste. They offer a sustainable yet high-performing alternative for tire POP labels and provide a solution for tire labels that must withstand significant stress and exposure while maintaining quality, legibility, and adherence. Materials in this category include rPP NG TOP WH and rPP TYRE TOP WH.

For the petrochemical sector: Incorporating 30% post-consumer waste, our new high-density polyethylene materials offer a robust option for labels on chemical drums and containers, providing resistance to water, weather, grease, and chemicals. With their premium matt-coated paper-like appearance, these films do not compromise aesthetics or functionality, ensuring that safety and sustainability go hand-in-hand. Additionally, they are designed to withstand harsh chemicals, weathering, and handling, ensuring that vital safety and product information remain intact for the product's lifetime. These solutions include rTUFF & TRANSFER rHDPE, and have been BS5609 section 2 certified—so customers can rest assured that their labels will maintain integrity and legibility.

Sustainable materials are the future

One thing is clear: Sustainable labeling solutions are here to stay and are becoming increasingly widespread within the industry. Thus, embracing more circular materials that don’t sacrifice performance and match the quality of their virgin predecessors seems sensible. Our new solutions reflect our efforts to drive positive change in the market. By embracing these innovations, businesses can not only comply with regulatory requirements but also take a step further in their sustainability journey.
