New version of RecyClass guidelines reflect findings from recent label releasability trial

As of July 16, 2024, RecyClass has released a new version of the Design for Recycling (DfR) Guidelines for all plastic packaging types. These new recommendations reflect a significant change in the requirements for adhesives used for labels, specifically for natural, white and colored rigid HDPE containers and tubes.

Previously, label guidelines on HDPE packaging required adhesives to be water-soluble or water-releasable at less than 40°C. The modified guidelines, which now state that adhesives must be removable in the recycling process, take into account all steps in the HDPE recycling process including shredding, grinding and washing.

We support these newly updated guidelines, which are in line with the results of a semi-industrial trial* that we conducted with The National Test center Circular Plastics (NTCP) earlier this year. The trial assessed the releasability of filmic labels during rigid HDPE packaging recycling. As a result, we found that our standard adhesive labels released almost entirely during the initial stages of the industrial recycling process (dry shredding and wet granulation), indicating friction, rather than temperature, was the key factor in enabling label removability.

“We have scientifically proven that Avery Dennison’s label solutions do not hinder the recycling of HDPE packaging,” says Rob Groen in ’t Wout, marketing director Paper and Film solutions, at Avery Dennison Materials Group EMENA. “We are pleased to see this reflected in the updated Design for Recycling guidelines and test protocols, which now more accurately reflect the full-scale HDPE recycling process.”

* Our trial, performed in February 2024, tested 50,000 white HDPE bottles with different combinations of filmic face materials and emulsion adhesives. It was found that 100% of Avery Dennison's standard adhesion filmic label solutions are released from HDPE packaging during the recycling process, resulting in clean HDPE flakes.
