AD Circular customer story Garcia Carrion

García-Carrión is committed to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions by recycling their wine label liner waste.

Did you know that in Europe alone, over 500,000 tons of glassine liner waste ends up in landfill each year? For García Carrión, a multinational giant in the wine and juice industry founded in Spain in 1890, this was an environmental challenge they were eager to solve. As a leading global company deeply committed to a circular economy, they needed a sustainable solution to tackle the waste generated by used label liners.

Enter AD Circular™, an innovative liner collection and recycling program designed to close the loop on liner waste, helping García Carrión advance its environmental goals while embracing a circular economy model.

The challenge

A longstanding issue García Carrión experienced over the years was the recycling of glassine paper liners, especially due to the siliconized backing used for self-adhesive labels. This material posed significant difficulties in recycling due to its complex composition, and historically the used liners ended up in landfills. This challenge was a critical roadblock in their mission to reduce their carbon footprint and represented a missed opportunity for more sustainable waste management practices.

The solution

Due to AD Circular’s collaboration with specialized recycling facilities that can handle silicone-coated waste, García Carrión are able to ensure their used glassine liners are collected and properly recycled. This not only reduces waste but also turns them into a valuable resource, enabling García Carrión to address the environmental impact of their label waste, help meet their sustainability goals and further advance their commitment to a circular economy.

The AD Circular team also provides García Carrión with expert guidance on how to optimally prepare waste, including advice on compacting materials to help reduce transport emissions and streamline the recycling process. Additionally, the AD Circular real-time tracking portal allows them to monitor the entire recycling process, track the amount of waste diverted from landfills and measure their CO2 reductions. This transparency and data accessibility has helped strengthen their internal reporting and demonstrated their commitment to sustainable practices.

The benefits

The results are impressive. In 2023 alone, García Carrión recycled more than 104 tons of glassine liners, saving over 190 tons of CO2 emissions. Additionally, experts from the AD Circular team also provided García Carrión with clear guidance on how to optimize the collection process and maximize the amount of material transported per load — consequently reducing the number of trips per load, which in turn further lowers their carbon footprint and reduces costs.

Real-time updates on the AD Circular portal significantly improved their ability to track and report their sustainability efforts, enabling them to monitor the entire recycling process from collection to processing, ensuring both transparency and accountability. It has also made it easier to share progress with stakeholders, bolstering their reputation as a sustainability leader in the beverage industry.

García Carrión highlighted the importance of the collaboration: “The AD Circular program has been transformative for us. Easy to use and implement, it has not only helped us address a critical waste challenge but also strengthened our commitment to the circular economy.”

Moving forward

For García Carrión, the collaboration with AD Circular has helped solidify their position as a sustainability leader in the beverage industry. By aligning innovative recycling practices with their long-term vision, they continue to set an example for others to follow.
