Studies have shown that a majority of consumers are willing to adopt products that prioritise sustainable packaging. For example, a McKinsey survey found that over 60% of respondents in the US are willing to buy environmentally and ethically sustainable products. Additionally, a study by NielsenIQ revealed that 78% of US consumers place importance on leading a greener lifestyle.
As a result, brands are recognizing the need to meet consumer demands, staying ahead of regulatory measures and making meaningful contributions to the environment. As part of this endeavor, Avery Dennison offers the Sustainable ADvantage portfolio, a comprehensive range of materials designed to improve the environmental impact of packaging while retaining the same or similar performance compared with traditional products, often without costing more.
Advancing Circularity with Sustainable ADvantage:-
Our Sustainable ADvantage portfolio offers a wide range of products designed to assist converters and brands in minimising material consumption, reducing their environmental impact, and supporting principles of safety, fairness, and human rights while keeping to government regulations.
Look into our sustainability report to see how each of our Sustainable ADvantage label materials is enabling businesses to enhance recyclability.
Contains Recycled or Renewable Content:
Our product incorporates sustainable practises by utilising facestocks and liners that consist of up to 30% recycled paper and plastics (PE, PP, PET), while the adhesives include biobased components sourced from renewable resources.
Reduction in the Use of Materials:
We have made plastic and paper labels thinner and lighter, oftentimes retaining the same performance while elevating productivity by carrying more labels per roll, which results in reduced machine downtime, decreased transportation needs, and optimised storage space.
Enables Recycling, Reuse, or Compostability:
We have created adhesives that enable the recyclability of PET through the clean removal of the label during the recycling process, leaving no residue and generating high quality raw materials. Our HDPE recycling solutions take a mono-material approach, allowing the label to stay on the container for recycling. Our wash-off solutions enable returnable glass bottle reuse, with adhesives that are easily removed during glass recycling.
Responsibly Sourced:
More than 80% of the Avery Dennison paper products are sourced from Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) certified materials. We also meet rigorous standards of product manufacturing in factories to remain environmentally friendly.
Labeling Solutions from the Sustainable ADvantage:-
Through our Sustainable ADvantage portfolio, we empower businesses to make environmentally conscious decisions while meeting their specific packaging needs. Let’s take a closer look at our products.
Contains Recycled or Renewable Content:
Our polypropylene labels use 30% recycled materials, the industry’s first label to maintain cost-neutrality compared to virgin-grade materials, making it a pioneering choice among companies. With Avery Dennison's industry-leading top coat, you get high-speed printing capabilities, a premium look and remarkable durability. Its reduced dependency on fossil fuel-based films contributes to developing a closed-loop system. It is ideally suited for diverse applications like home and personal care products, cosmetics, and food and beverage items.
Reduction in the Use of Materials:
To address the challenge of reducing label waste, we’ve developed a linerless range of our direct thermal (DT) solution — AD XeroLinr DT™ — to offer an efficient, high-performing, sustainable alternative for variable information (VI) applications. With excellent resolution for barcode scanning and readability, AD XeroLinr DT™ can be used for a variety of applications, including quick service restaurants, weigh-scale and e-commerce.
AD XeroLinr DT™ carries up to 60% more labels per roll compared to conventional DT labels, with increased machine uptime due to less frequent roll changeover on thermal printers. It further reduces logistics costs as it’s able to store more labels per truckload, per warehouse, and per delivery. Additionally, with the complete elimination of liners, there is less label waste disposal.
Enables Recycling, Reuse, or Compostability:
CleanFlake technology for PET recycling:
CleanFlake™ technology is a revolutionary solution, particularly for PET packaging. This innovative technology is designed to improve plastic recyclability through a clean separation of the label from the PET container during the recycling sink-float process, a critical step in extracting pure PET flakes for food-grade bottle-to-bottle recycling. Adhesives deactivate during the recycling process, and pressure-sensitive labels get cleanly and easily removed while holding the ink, leaving no adhesive residue on the flakes. The technology also enables incorrectly applied labels to be cleanly removed from the PET container, saving containers and their contents from being wasted. Our CleanFlake™ is accredited by the APR (Association of Plastic Recyclers) for its contribution to the recyclability of PET and is the recipient of numerous awards.
Monomaterial packaging for HDPE recycling:
The Avery Dennison portfolio of polypropylene, polyolefin, and polyethylene labels with emulsion Acrylic adhesives take a monomaterial approach to sustainable packaging. Monomaterial packaging is a game-changing solution that is specifically designed from a single material. Monomaterial packaging for HDPE recycling eliminate the need for complex sorting and allow the label to remain on the HDPE container during recycling without impacting the overall physical properties of the recycled pellets for pigmented applications. This not only reduces waste but also contributes to the preservation of valuable resources. Our HDPE monomaterial solution is the first to pass testing and to meet and exceed the strictest APR (Association of Plastic Recyclers) HDPE Critical Guidance criteria
Glass recycling solutions:
The Avery Dennison Wash-Off portfolio provides innovative labeling options designed to facilitate glass recycling. These labels feature a unique adhesive that allows them to be easily removed during the glass recycling process. By ensuring clean separation, the labels minimize contamination and improve the quality of recycled glass. Our wash-off solutions provide excellent adhesion and durability, ensuring the labels stay intact during product use but can be effortlessly washed off during the recycling process.Responsibly Sourced.
